EXCLUSIVE:
MFA INVESTIGATION AND
OPEN RESCUE
AT OHIO'S LARGEST EGG
FACTORY FARMS |
The
Update
During an October 18, 2001 press conference, held at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium in Columbus, MFA investiga-tors disclosed the disturbing findings of this investigation to members of the media. Graphic video footage from the in-vestigation was aired on NBC and CBS. Two MFA investigators did a sit down interview for PBS (which later ran on all 12 Ohio PBS stations) informing listeners of the horrific cruelty that takes place to hens on factory farms. The Toledo Blade, The Dayton Daily News, The Springfield News Sun, The Mansfield Examiner, Gannet Newspapers, and The Free Press ran wonderful stories detailing the abuses uncovered at both egg farms. MFA captured the cover story for The Impact Weekly, which, along with a great story, also printed photographs from the investigation. Radio listeners from across Ohio were informed on the inherent cruelties of the egg industry when Ohio Public Radio (which is broadcast across Ohio on over 40 radio stations) did two stories on the investigation and rescue. The normally conservative, but widely listened to, 610-WTVN radio also did a report. The Meria Heller show (heard in over 52 countries) devoted a whole hour to the findings of the investigators. At one point the host of the show said "I have seen a lot of animal rights videos...this is by far the most disturbing I have ever seen."
Video evidence, veterinary statements, and letters were sent by MFA to the prosecutors in Wyandot and Union county requesting that animal cruelty charges be brought against Buckeye and Daylay Egg Farm. The letters cited violations of Ohio’s anti-cruelty laws that were documented at the egg farms.
As of press time no prosecution has taken place against the egg farms or the MFA investigators.
What
You Can Do
Don't Buy Eggs.
Ninety-eight percent of eggs are produced from hens forced to live in battery cages. Almost every egg eaten from a restaurant, a fast-food place, or purchased at your local grocery store has come from hens living in similar conditions to those found during MFA’s investigation.
Go Vegan.
Adopting a vegan diet, one free of animal products, is the most important thing you can do to promote kindness and compassion towards animals. Hens are not the only animals that suffer miserably on factory farms. Pigs, cows, turkeys, and other farmed animals suffer from a system in which living feeling animals are regarded as mere property, commodities to be exploited for every last penny.
Every time you sit down for a meal, you have the choice to contribute to animal abuse, suffering, and exploitation, or to make the kind, compassionate, and liberating choice of veganism. Please, for the animals, go vegan!
Educate Yourself
In order to fight these injustices, we must first educate ourselves before we can educate others. Read a book, watch a documentary, and contact MFA for a free vegan starter kit.
