Whether it is banner drops, library displays, information tables, video showings, or tasty feed-ins, every day MFA is working hard for the over 20 billion farmed animals killed annually in the United States with an ongoing campaign to promote veganism. Outlined below are just a few of MFA’s new tools and tactics aimed at opening the hearts and minds of Ohioans to the plight of farmed animals.
Feeding the Homeless
MFA has been serving up compassion in more ways than one this holiday season by preparing fabulous vegan feasts at homeless shelters in Columbus and Cincinnati. The meals were complete with the traditional holiday stuffing, baked sweet potatoes, and topped-off with grandma’s homemade pumpkin pie. The feasts also included Tofurky – a delicious soy-based roast with a turkey-like texture and flavor. News coverage of the events reached countless holiday shoppers with the message that a vegan lifestyle is the healthy, humane, and sustainable choice. By providing bulk recipes for easy and cheap vegan meals, MFA is encouraging Ohio’s shelters to support non-violent foods that everyone can be thankful for.
Melting Hearts with Dairy-Free Treats
Focusing on the often hidden abuse of dairy cows and their unwanted male offspring, MFA has been taking on the dairy industry with demonstrations and vegan ice-cream feed-ins at Dairy Queen locations and on busy downtown street corners. Delicious dairy-free “Toffuti Cuties” have had even the most die-hard dairy-lovers screaming for seconds at MFA feed-ins in Columbus and Dayton. Backed by a banner reading “Dairy is Udderly Cruel,” activists have distributed countless brochures dishing the dirt on dairy cruelty. Dairy cows typically live on muddy, feces-and urine-soaked lots devoid of any vegetation. Baby calves are torn from their mothers’ sides within days of birth, causing severe distress before being relegated to the dark, cramped, conditions of the veal crate.
Seeing is Believing
Mercy For Animals believes that video footage documenting the oppressive nature of institutionalized farmed animal abuse is one of the most powerful tools in promoting humane food choices. MFA’s newest outreach tool, a mobile TV unit called a Faunette, has been traveling to busy pedestrian intersections across Ohio to educate consumers about factory farming. The Faunette airs graphic video footage depicting the systematic abuse of pigs, cattle, chickens and turkeys on "modern" factory farms. In Dayton, Cincinnati, Oxford, Cleveland, and Columbus, crowds of passing pedestrians have been visibly shocked, horrified, and in disbelief of the images they witness.
On hand at every Faunette appearance are dedicated MFA members who have distributed tens of thousands of informational Why Vegan? booklets on the ethical and health benefits of a vegan diet. The events encourage passing individuals to engage in a one-on-one conversations with someone who is knowledgeable about veganism and factory farming.

I was in downtown Cincinnati yesterday and I was so impressed with the group of young men and their monitor screen with film footage of cows, pigs, chickens, etc. I think you have a great campaign going. It’s one thing to see a picture but it’s another thing to actually see the horrific film footage of how animals are treated in slaughterhouses. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with your group.
I hope I can change, even if I have to just slowly wean myself off these products. Thank you again for being out there and giving the message. I’m just so impressed.

I had no idea what these poor animals went through. I haven’t been able to look at hamburgers, eggs, or even milk in the same way since I saw your pamphlet…. I’m ready to change my life one sandwich at a time. Thank you so much.
