Dear Friends,
We live in a society today that makes it convenient to flip the station, turn the page, and look the other way when we see something unpleasant that penetrates our often sheltered view of the injustices occurring around us. Animal cruelty is unpleasant, regardless of whether it is an individual beating a dog, drowning a litter of kittens, or the industrialized cruelty of modern factory farms and slaughterhouses that reduces sentient beings to nothing more than production units and consumable products.
As unpleasant as the issue may be, Mercy For Animals believes that consumers have the right to know what happens to the animals turned into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We also feel that these animals deserve to have their tragic stories told. For these reasons, MFA investigators document the reality of factory farming and expose it to the public. Images of animal cruelty in the meat, dairy, and egg industry are offensive. It is often easy to misdirect feelings of anger, provoked by horrifying scenes or stories from factory farms, toward the brave individuals who dare to reveal them, rather than at the industries and corporations responsible for the appalling abuse.
In this issue of Outrage you will be given an eye-opening glimpse behind the closed doors of factory farms and slaughterhouses. You will read the gripping stories of what former workers witnessed and experienced, in their own words. If you are disturbed by their stories, feel empowered knowing that you can take action to help end this abuse. One person does make the difference. Choosing to bare witness to an injustice so you can work more effectively and diligently to end it is a powerful way to make our world a kinder and gentler place.
Billions of animals cannot afford for compassionate individuals to simply turn a blind eye, ignoring the injustices being committed against them. Our inaction to address an injustice is as much an injustice as the actions of those committing the atrocities.
For the animals,
Nathan Runkle
MFA Director
