Now on Sale: MFA's Hip New Pro-Vegetarian T-Shirts

Make room in your closet for MFA's two newest must-have shirts.

The first of these two wildly popular pro-vegetarian hipster Ts features the etchings of the human rib cage, a dotted line illuminating the stomach, and a swallowed baby chick-with-attitude declaring "Not Cool."

A larger chick rests on the back bottom corner of the T who concludes "Go Vegetarian!"

The other eye-catching shirt includes a parody of the classic Beef Cuts diagram used by butchers, with the meat cut euphemisms replaced with words exposing the brutal truth behind beef: "cruelty," "heart disease," "global warming," "deforestation," and "exploitation" just to name a few.

Both shirts are just $20 and printed on sweatshop-free shirts from American Apparel.

Article: The Meat of the Matter

E Magazine

July/August 2008 Issue

Ask most Americans about what causes global warming, and they'll point to a coal plant smokestack or a car's tailpipe.

They're right, of course, but perhaps two other images should be granted similarly iconic status: the front and rear ends of a cow.

According to a little-known 2006 United Nations report entitled "Livestock's Long Shadow," livestock is a major player in climate change, accounting for 18 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions (measured in carbon dioxide equivalents).

That's more than the entire transportation system! Unfortunately, this incredibly important revelation has received only limited attention in the media.

How could methane from cows, goats, sheep and other livestock have such a huge impact? As Chris Goodall points out in his book How to Live a Low-Carbon Life (Earthscan Publications), "Ruminant animals [chewing a cud], such as cows and sheep, produce methane as a result of the digestive process…Dairy cows are particularly important sources of methane because of the volume of food, both grass and processed material, that they eat."

Article: Farm animal rights law would require room to roam

Associated Press

July 28, 2008

Kim Sturla began bringing goats, pigs, chickens and cows once slated for slaughter to her sanctuary 20 years ago, before supermarkets offered eggs from cage-free hens and beef was advertised on menus as being hormone free.

Two decades later, the treatment of farm animals is a national issue being debated in state Legislatures and put before voters. Footage circulated on the Internet of sick farm animals being kicked and beaten has intensified calls for reform.

"People want conditions to change," said Sturla, who co-founded the Animal Place sanctuary for abused and discarded farm animals in 1989. "On this issue, you don't have to give propaganda. In fact, you have to downplay the conditions or people will shut down. They'll think you're embellishing."
