Alexis Scherba
Chicago Outreach Coordinator
AlexisS@MercyForAnimals.org

Alexis Scherba serves as a Mercy For Animals' Chicago Outreach Coordinator. Since early summer 2009, she has coordinated feed-ins, protests and leafleting events, spoken at outreach events, exhibited at festivals, co-organized fundraising events, organized volunteer trips to farmed animal sanctuaries, and promoted cruelty-free eating through MFA's Vegetarian Dining Campaign.

Growing up in the San Francisco area, Alexis was familiar with veganism from an early age, but it was a communications class assignment on factory farming during her college freshman year that inspired her to go vegan. This transition to a compassionate, plant-based diet sparked her efforts to create the Loyola University Chicago's Vegetarian & Vegan Society. Due to her outstanding advocacy work with the Society, Alexis was honored with the "Youth Activist of the Year" award at MFA's 2009 Chicago Celebrating Compassion Gala.

Currently, she is pursuing a second Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at Loyola and wishes to attend veterinary school to earn her DVM. Alexis plans to use her education and future career to care for all animals and reduce their suffering.

In her spare time, Alexis enjoys volunteering at rescued animal shelter clinics, traveling, tending to her organic patio garden, and trying out new vegan cuisine in Chicago. She is also very fond of vegan cooking and runs her own cooking blog, Vegan Miss, which she updates regularly with her own recipes and worldwide vegan restaurant reviews. She lives in Chicago with her two rescued special-needs cats – Popeye, who is half blind, and Lucy, who is completely blind.

Whether organizing an event, promoting animal advocacy on the streets, or working hands-on with animals, Alexis keeps a positive and friendly attitude in her efforts to support veganism and animal protection.
