Phil Letten
Farm to Fridge Tour Coordinator
PhilL@MercyForAnimals.org
Phil serves as Mercy For Animals' Farm to Fridge Tour Coordinator, traveling to more than forty U.S. cities with a multi-media advocacy truck, retrofitted with 80” TV monitors and speakers. The tour features lectures and screenings of MFA's compelling new documentary Farm to Fridge at college campuses, festivals and busy downtown locations. As the Farm to Fridge Tour Coordinator, Phil aims to generate mass awareness of factory farming and veganism, while also meeting and building relationships with animal advocates in each city.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Michigan, Phil first learned about factory farming when he received a Why Vegan? brochure at a concert. After learning of the routine abuses farmed animals are forced to endure, Phil watched undercover footage revealing the horrors of factory farms, hatcheries, and slaughterhouses and decided that because animals feel pain just like humans, he no longer wanted to contribute to their suffering. He immediately went vegetarian and transitioned to veganism soon afterwards. Phil now feels that advocating on behalf of farmed animals is the easiest and best way to most reduce suffering in the world.
Phil holds a degree in Political Science from Michigan State University where he was an active member of the student animal rights group. He is also involved in many different social justice movements and has helped organize peace, environmental, and gay rights events and demonstrations. He has toured extensively as a volunteer with various animal rights organizations and has distributed nearly 100,000 leaflets in the last year and a half alone. Phil was also a volunteer for the Ohioans for Humane Farms Campaign and worked closely with MFA to gather signatures for a historic ballot initiative to help prevent cruelty to over 27 million farmed animals in the state - including egg-laying hens, breeding pigs, and calves raised for veal.
Growing up, Phil shared his home with Lillie, a dog whom he viewed as very much a part of the family. Lillie helped Phil make the connection between companion animals and farmed animals – both of whom have their own unique personalities and are equally capable of experiencing fear, pain and suffering, as well as love, joy and friendship. It was partly because of his love for Lillie that Phil became a dedicated animal protection advocate and she is the reason he encourages others to speak up for animals too.
When not traveling the world speaking up for animals (Phil has been to almost every state in the US, Canada, eight European countries, as well as Mexico and El Salvador), he likes to work out and eat delicious vegan food. Phil loves ethnic cuisine, particularly Indian, Thai and Chinese, but he also has a soft spot for Boca Chik'n burgers with Vegenaise.
