Director of Media Relations

Terms of Employment: Full-time

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Objective:

To maximize media coverage for MFA's campaigns and investigations in order to inform and inspire the public about the organization's vital work on behalf of farmed animals in a positive, consistent and credible manner. The Director of Media Relations will also be responsible for developing and executing an effective external communications program to raise the profile of the organization to key demographics.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop and implement strategies aimed at generating media coverage of MFA's campaigns, investigations, events, ads, and website interviews and features
  • Formulate new and interesting angles with which to approach bloggers, reporters, and other media outlets in order to generate more exposure for MFA's work
  • Develop MFA's messaging platform nationally and regionally and integrate those messages across news releases, social media channels, and MFA websites
  • Develop and maintain relationships with celebrities and other high-profile individuals and engage them in MFA campaigns, events, and advertisements to generate media exposure
  • Write and edit hard-hitting and issue-oriented press releases, advisories and media pitches
  • Work with MFA directors and key staff to create media pitch plans and organize press conferences for breaking investigations and events
  • Draft talking points and help prepare and train MFA spokespeople for media interviews
  • Respond to media queries, provide background information and facilitate interviews with key staff
  • Keep informed of local and national columnists at papers, magazines, wires, and websites and track relevant media coverage
  • Develop and maintain relationships with members of the media and select online reporters and maintain MFA's list of media contacts
  • Work with television, print, and radio companies to secure PSA space donations, reduced rates, and contracts for MFA television, radio and print ads
  • Draft op-eds and articles for external publication and edit letters to the editors written by MFA staff and volunteers
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

 
Position Requirements:

  • Degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of media relations experience
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of the media industry
  • Excellent working knowledge of print, broadcast, and online media outlets
  • Thorough knowledge of MFA's mission
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and deal with a variety of people in a professional manner
  • Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
  • Support for MFA's philosophy and the ability to advocate MFA's positions professionally
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organization
