Here's How You Can Fight Climate Change Since the Trump Administration Won't

According to NASA’s website, at least 97 percent of actively publishing climate scientists agree that climate change is real. The debate over whether human activity is causing global temperatures to rise is finished. Quite frankly, it has been for well over a decade.

If we don’t do something now to curb climate change, scientists warn the planet faces disastrous consequences: from intensified storms and rising sea levels to the extinction of millions of species.

Governments should take action now to help protect the planet and its inhabitants. Sadly, not only will the Trump administration not be taking action; it also questions whether climate change is even real.

So while those in Washington argue and deny facts, it’s time for us to take matters into our own hands. Here is how you can fight climate change on your own.

Go vegan.

Sounds simple, right? That’s because it is. Raising animals for food produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all of the cars, planes, and other forms of transportation combined.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, carbon dioxide emissions from raising farmed animals make up about 15 percent of global human-induced emissions, with beef and milk production as the leading culprits.

Additionally, simply by avoiding animal products, you cut your carbon footprint in half. Keep in mind that a pound of beef requires 13 percent more fossil fuel to produce than a pound of soy.

According to a 2015 report by U.K.-based think tank Chatham House, it’s imperative that governments influence people’s diets to combat climate change. One of the report’s authors, Laura Wellesly, told VICE:
[R]aising awareness about the health and environmental impacts of meat is an important first step, but on its own it will not lead to significant behavior change. Governments must do more to influence diets.
If the Trump administration refuses to acknowledge climate change as a real danger, let alone educate the public on the connection between meat and global warming, we the people must rise and take action.
