Legal Advocacy

Farmed animals are perhaps the most abused and exploited creatures on the planet. Mercy For Animals is at the forefront of efforts to win justice for farmed animals in the court of law—prosecuting abusers and pressing for stronger legal protections.

Defending the Innocent

There are few laws protecting farmed animals. Yet these innocent beings are just as deserving of protection from cruelty and abuse as the dogs and cats so many of us know and love. MFA’s legal advocacy department has achieved unprecedented success in securing the enforcement of existing legal protections for farmed animals while continuing to push for new and better laws on their behalf.

Cruelty Prosecutions

When it comes to enforcement of criminal animal cruelty laws, MFA has turned the tide. Through the combined efforts of our legal advocacy and undercover investigations departments, MFA has set a new nationwide precedent for holding individuals accountable for abusing farmed animals. In the past few years, our work has resulted in numerous raids of factory farms by law enforcement, the closure of particularly corrupt facilities, and the criminal prosecutions of dozens of factory farm owners, managers, and employees for animal abuse.

Legislation

MFA is committed to advancing legislation on both the state and federal levels to improve the welfare of animals at factory farms and slaughterhouses. Our efforts include testifying before state legislatures, working collaboratively with other advocacy groups, and mobilizing our members and supporters to speak out and take action.

Ag-Gag

The advent of “ag-gag” laws—the factory farming industry’s attempt to silence whistleblowers and keep consumers in the dark about where their food comes from—has quickly become an issue of national importance, and MFA has become a leading voice of opposition. From mobilizing local residents and holding news conferences to organizing public protests and working with a broad coalition of animal protection, food safety, workers’ rights, and civil liberties organizations, MFA is at the forefront of the fight against ag-gag.
