Mercy For Animals Investigation Reveals Pattern of Cruelty to Turkeys

butterball turkey.jpgToday, Mercy For Animals in the US released a new investigation into an old problem: the treatment of turkeys on Butterball’s factory farms is shocking and appalling.

During October 2012 at numerous Butterball facilities in North Carolina, an MFA investigator documented rampant abuse and neglect, including:

  • workers kicking and stomping on birds, dragging them by their fragile wings and necks, and maliciously throwing turkeys onto the ground or on top of other birds;
  • birds suffering from serious untreated illnesses and injuries, including open sores, infections, and broken bones; and
  • workers grabbing birds by their wings or necks and violently slamming them into tiny transport crates with no regard for their welfare.
This is virtually the same cruelty that was documented by MFA at a Butterball facility in 2011. That investigation led to five criminal cruelty charges being laid.

While factory farms deny that cruelty is a systemic problem, Mercy For Animals shows the public time and again that animals are suffering behind the closed doors of factory farms.
