Life on “Old MacDonald’s Farm” isn’t what it used to be. The green pastures and idyllic barnyard scenes portrayed in children’s books have been replaced by windowless, metal sheds, wire cages, and other confinement systems integral to what is now known as factory farming. The industrialization of animal cruelty by factory farms and slaughterhouses is being challenged by a growing movement of animal advocates, health professionals, and environmentalists. MFA dedicates the majority of its resources to exposing the horrors of modern animal agriculture to the public and promoting veganism as a healthy and compassionate alternative to the violence associated with the typical meat-based diet.

MFA is teaming up with Ohio libraries to get the word out about the benefits of a vegan diet by supplying over 250 locations with free Vegetarian Starter Kits and Veg-Friendly Ohio Guides. Library patrons will also see our traveling library exhibit with effective graphics and essential information to help people understand how animals go from the factory farm to the dinner plate.

When causes converge for festivals or celebrations, MFA is there with eye-catching displays to educate attendees about the horrors of factory farming and the advantages of a vegan diet. Members of MFA frequently travel to Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Athens, and other cities across Ohio with a professional, detailed, and illustrative display to Earth Day celebrations, gay pride festivals, conferences, and other events.

Humane educators from MFA work with teachers and professors to discuss with students of all ages why veganism is good for animals, our health, and the environment. Presenters use a variety of techniques in classrooms, such as holding discussions and showing investigation documentaries, to bring attention to animal rights issues and encourage ethical food choices.

MFA recently launched ChooseVeg.com, a new website that contains compelling information, photographs, and video footage covering the many reasons to eliminate animal products from your shopping list. Visitors can also choose from hundreds of delicious cruelty-free recipes for any occasion.

Over 100 establishments across the state now proudly display MFA’s “Vegetarian-Friendly” window decal and distribute Veg-Friendly Ohio Guides to their customers. MFA's Veg-Friendly Ohio campaign coordinators have been working with a growing number of restaurants to implement and expand vegetarian options. Two such examples are The Waiting Room and High Five in the heart of Columbus’ Short North district. The Waiting Room now offers vegan deli sandwiches and cookies. Using suggestions from MFA’s Veg-Friendly campaign coordinators, High Five added vegan babyback ribs and a portabella burger to their vegan options.

Many otherwise compassionate people continue to consume animal products because they fear giving up their favorite foods. Outside of meat and dairy-serving establishments, as well as in busy downtown locations, MFA members give passerbys vegan ice cream sandwiches, tofurky sandwiches, and “not dogs” to show that every factory farmed food has a delicious alternative. At feed-ins, MFA distributes free literature to help people make the transition to a cruelty-free diet.

Members of MFA reach thousands of people in cities across Ohio by handing out leaflets during major events and near large businesses and universities. In 2004, volunteers distributed over 40,000 pieces of literature. The new “body screen” TV and the mobile “faunette,” which accompany MFA members to outreach events, give the public a view inside slaughterhouses by airing graphic footage that stops pedestrians in their tracks.

MFA is proud to announce the creation of our new 32-page Vegetarian Starter Kit. Complete with facts, resources, recipes, tips, and more, this extensively researched and referenced piece of literature balances strong graphics with solid information. A must-read for anyone considering the transition to a cruelty-free diet.

Introducing the second edition Veg-Friendly Ohio Guide. This 48-page booklet lists over one hundred fifty restaurants and sixty health food stores all over the state that cater to vegetarians. This convenient resource includes establishment names, addresses, business hours, phone numbers, and a sample of menu items.
