Donating stocks (or other securities such as mutual funds, bonds, etc.) to Mercy For Animals is a fantastic way of investing in our life-saving work. Your generous support through stock donations will go a long way to help fight animal abuse, while giving you income tax and capital gains benefits.
Your stock donation to Mercy For Animals entitles you to an income tax deduction of the full current market value of your gift. If you have owned stock for one year or more, and it has appreciated (increased in value) since you first purchased it, then you can save on the capital gains tax you would pay if you sold the stock yourself. By donating the stock to Mercy For Animals, the capital gains tax will no longer apply!
To donate stock, simply send a written letter of instruction to your broker, authorizing them to electronically transfer your shares.
The letter should contain the following:
- Specify the stock (Google, Microsoft, Ford, etc.) and the number of shares to be transferred from your account (make sure to include your account number).
- Specify that you are transferring the stock to Mercy For Animals' brokerage account:
TD Ameritrade Account # 784-674134
DTC # 0188
- Provide them with MFA's contact information:
Mercy For Animals
P.O. Box 363
Columbus, OH 43216
- Be signed by the donor/shareholder
