Billions of farmed animals are brutally killed for food every year. Many go to great lengths to escape their cruel fates. These four viral stories from 2017 prove we should all be vegan.
1. The cow who escaped a Queens slaughterhouse
In February, a cow escaped a Queens, New York, slaughterhouse and ran for his life through busy city streets.
Photos on social media showed the cow scared and running between cars and homes. NBC’s news chopper spotted him between two houses as police tried to wrangle him. Sadly, he passed away shortly after being caught. It is believed a combination of sedation, injuries sustained from fleeing, and exhaustion led to his death.
2. The cow who ran from a slaughterhouse right to a sanctuary
In March, a cow destined for slaughter escaped a ranch in California and broke into Grass Valley’s Animal Place Sanctuary.
The 800-pound bovine named Davey broke down a fence on the 600-acre sanctuary and integrated with the herd after only a few hours. Animal Care Director Hannah Beins spotted him and knew immediately that he was not one of Animal Place’s cows. Fearing possible penalties, the sanctuary set out to find where the Angus-Highland mix had come from, calling neighbors, posting flyers, and notifying the local animal shelter.
Thankfully, after hearing about Davey’s immediate bond with the herd, the rancher agreed to relinquish him to the sanctuary’s care.
3. The six steers who ran through St. Louis
In April, six steers ran through St. Louis in a desperate attempt to save their lives. After fleeing a neighborhood slaughterhouse, they managed to dodge police and animal control officers for more than five hours.
Shortly after being caught, they were handed over to Gentle Barn animal sanctuary where they will spend the rest of their lives in peace.
4. The Brooklyn cow who evaded capture
In October, a young cow escaped a slaughterhouse and ended up in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. After running through bustling city streets for over two hours, the cow was cornered and captured by police.
After arriving at Brooklyn Animal Care and Control, the cow was turned over to Skylands Sanctuary.
Sensitive and intelligent like the dogs and cats we know and love, cows, pigs, chickens, and other farmed animals will fight for their lives.
