In June of 2010, Ohio leaders including former Governor Ted Strickland, the Ohio Farm Bureau and the agribusiness lobby agreed that by the end of 2017, calves of all ages that are raised for veal must be given at least enough room to turn around comfortably. Sadly, in a move away from this agreement, the Livestock Board voted on March 1st to continue to allow Ohio’s veal producers to chain baby calves in narrow wooden crates for the first 10 weeks of their short 16 week lives, making it impossible for them to turn around, stretch or even lie down comfortably.
